Genius RO: our reverse osmosis desalination solution

The solar-powered reverse osmosis desalination system is Genius Watter's core product.

Genius RO systems are designed to desalinate seawater or brackish water and purify it to remove contaminants, supplying fresh water at a rate of 20 to 3,000 m3/day.

Each system is designed and engineered to the client’s specific requirements, to ensure unbeatable performance over time.

Our system’s innovation lies in the successful combination of the constant but inherently energy-intensive osmosis process with a variable renewable energy source like solar, doing away with the need for batteries, and without risking damage to the system’s components.
We harness all available sunlight, producing and storing all the water required during the day.

100% off-grid solar-powered water supply with our patented technology

Our solar-powered seawater and brackish water desalination system has been designed for the very purpose of providing battery-free operation, working efficiently, flexibly and offering long service life.

The system operates using what is referred to as RO (Reverse Osmosis) technology, running fully automatically and entirely in sync with the sun and its varying sunlight levels.

The whole system can run even with low sunlight levels (less than 200 W/m2, from around 8 in the morning to 5 o’clock at night); this makes it very flexible, and it can harness up to 90% of the available photovoltaic power.

Genius RO always ensures a minimum supply of clean water from early morning to late afternoon, reaching the highest quantity during the middle of the day, when the sun’s radiation is at its strongest.

How our integrated system works: from desalination to distribution

Analysis and surveying

Instruments and methods to accurately locate underground aquifers, such as drone-based technologies designed to detect their presence, depth, volume and GPS location

Pumping

Battery-free solar-powered variable frequency drive pumping system to feed the reverse osmosis unit, which requires feedwater to be supplied at a constant pressure.
This system also regulates its operation according to solar radiation, in symbiosis with the sun. Water is then stored in a holding tank pending subsequent treatment

Pre-treatment

Using a combination of different filters, the feedwater is suitably cleaned to remove residues that might otherwise clog the osmosis membranes, thus ensuring that the system runs smoothly.

Desalination

High-pressure pumps are used to pump the water through the osmosis membranes that filter out the salt and other impurities. Once the water makes it through the osmotic membranes, it is purified and remineralized.
The desalination unit is placed inside a special insulated container, along with the electrical components and all the equipment required for pre- and post-treatment and system monitoring.

Post-treatment

If the resulting water is to be fit for drinking, we carry out these treatments:

  • Purification to remove bacterial contaminants from the water and make it safe for human consumption.
  • Remineralization to replenish lost mineral salts, which give the water its excellent taste.

Storage

Once the desalination and post-treatment process is completed, the water is stored in an elevated tank, ready for subsequent consumption.
We use flexible tanks to store the desalinated water as they are easy to install and are practically zero maintenance

Distribution

We have three different options for the distribution of desalinated water:

  • Through a water ATM for the supply of water on demand.
  • Through the building’s plumbing system.
  • With drip irrigation in agricultural regions

The plant is factory inspected and tested: once on site, installation is very quick and, once installed, the plant operates automatically. In addition, it can be containerized or installed in an existing plant room.

How Genius distributes the water

Water ATMs

Method of accessing water by means of a drinking water vending machine — located some distance from the plant — that can be used to fill water trucks or 5-litre jerry cans.

Simply use a reloadable prepaid card or mobile payment: a certain amount of money corresponds to a given amount of dispensed water.

The water ATM can be located away from or near the water collection point (such as a village, for instance), depending on the project specifications and client requirements.

Building's plumbing system

The plant is connected straight to the building’s plumbing (a system of pipes and valves), allowing water to be delivered to different rooms simply and effortlessly.

In the event of a hotel, for instance, water is supplied directly to the kitchen, laundry, bar and individual guest rooms: simply turn on a standard tap to get running water treated by our desalination unit.

Drip irrigation

As above, our plant is connected straight to the end system, in this case a drip irrigation system.

This solution brings a number of important advantages, including a significant reduction in water usage, as it is delivered to the roots of plants more accurately than with sprinkler or surface irrigation systems.
